Seminar Topics:

Becoming a Faculty of and for the 21st century

-- What are the roles and responsibilities (and opportunities) for the faculty of the 21st century?

-- According to Parker Palmer, who is the "new professional"? What is the role of higher education in fostering 21st-century professionals?

-- How does Palmer’s argument affect the curriculum and pedagogy for undergraduates in your own disciplines?

-- Why is Gordon Gee calling for the “radical reform” of higher education? Do you think reform is needed? Why? If so, how do we move toward such reform?

-- What is Mark Carnes calling for in “Setting Students Minds On Fire”?

-- How is effective teaching like good conducting?

Assignment for seminar:
If possible, please bring your laptop tonight. This is our final seminar meeting for the fall semester.

Please read the Parker Palmer article, ""A New Professional: The Aims of Education Revisited," and try to skim/read through the other short articles, and view the TED talk link, if you have a moment.

These readings focus our attention on how we better negotiate the roles and responsibilities of being engaged and engaging educators for the 21st century.
